Although both work in the piping industry, pipefitters/steamfitters differ from plumbers as they generally work with more industrial piping that involves high pressure systems. From refineries to production plants to pipelines, they build and maintain the lines that keep our energy sources flowing in a safe and economical way.

Responsibilities
- Apply training in rigging, project planning and quality control
- Lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain, repair and service equipment and piping systems
- Measure, cut, thread, bend and install metal, plastic and fiberglass pipes, valves and fittings
- Weld, cement, solder and join pipes and related equipment
- Read blueprints, specifications and codes
- Make detailed sketches for pipe and equipment fabrication and installation, as required

Entrance Requirements
If you don’t have Grade 12, contact Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trades Commission to have your academic qualifications assessed.
Apprenticeship Program:
Approximately 4-5 years, includes Safety, UA Local Apprenticeship and Provincial Apprenticeship training, as well as technical and on-the-job training, and exam. Journeyperson certificate awarded after successful completion. As an apprentice, you also earn while you learn.
